Huntsville, AL:

Located on the Madison County Nature Trail on Green Mountain, this drinking fountain was restored in 2001 by Butch Chaffin. Beside the fountain is a plaque that reads:

Around the turn of the century (1900) a group of women organized into a union whose mission consisted of giving individuals a choice between a drink of water or a drink of alcohol at a nearby saloon. This water fountain was placed on the southeast corner of Madison County, Alabama Courthouse Square and remained there until the courthouse was replaced with the current building in the mid-1960s. The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union exists today and is active in the war against drug and alcohol abuse. Please enjoy a cool drink of water from this fountain of the past. Help us preserve this piece of history by treating it with kindness.
