1906 - 1933: New Directors & New Directions for Scientific Temperance Instruction
After Hunt’s death, Edith Smith Davis (pictured here) became the director of STI, serving until 1917. Davis established WCTU poster and essay contest programs in public schools--programs that continue today.

Under the leadership of Elizabeth Middleton, who served as STI Director from 1917 to 1925, legislation was passed in many states to promote a day—called Frances Willard Day or Temperance Day--for teaching temperance in public schools. Interest in STI was also continued through such publications as the Temperance Education Quarterly and the Scientific Temperance Journal.
Cora Frances Stoddard (pictured) directed STI from 1925 to 1933 and compiled many reports and studies on the topic. A few of the many pamphlets she also produced are displayed here. However, during Stoddard’s tenure-- the Prohibition years—many schools deemed scientific temperance instruction unnecessary and eliminated the programs.
